Hyundai Mobis has developed a 160-kilowatt (kW) power electric system for general-purpose electric vehicles (EVs), in a move to build a wider drive system lineup covering various types of EVs, the company said Thursday. The auto parts maker already completed development for its high-performance 250-kW PE system and plans to do the same for a 120-kW power electric system tailored for small mobility vehicles by the first half this year. Upon its completion, the company will be able to cover power electric systems for all types of EVs. The power electric system is considered a core auto component equivalent to the powertrain of an internal combustion engine. The system consists of a motor, inverter and reduction gear. Hyundai Mobis focused on standardizing key auto components and modularizing them during the development of its proprietary system. These include the stator for the drive motor, the inverter, and the power module, which is a bundle of power semiconductors. This modularized

Hyundai Motor Group’s battery subscription model for electric vehicles (EVs) is expected to significantly lower upfront costs and accelerate broader EV adoption across the nation, once the carmaker proves the project's economic feasibility, industry officials said Wednesday. The automaker plans to launch the demonstration project in the first half of this year, targeting corporate taxi fleets whose vehicle warranties have expired. Once it proves successful, the firm will then expand the range of the service to individual EV customers. The program centers on separating EV battery ownership from the vehicle. For example, the price of Kia’s EV6 for corporate taxi use dropped to 18.6 million won ($12,700) last year when the battery cost was excluded. Customers instead pay about 1.4 million won per month as a battery subscription fee, which the carmaker says is lower than the typical monthly cost of LPG fuel. Hyundai Motor Group will operate the pilot service with five IONIQ 5 taxis driving

Sales of Hyundai Motor and Kia vehicles in the United States fell slightly from a year earlier, while numbers for hybrid vehicles rose to a new monthly high, the automaker said Monday. The Korean automakers sold a combined 159,216 vehicles in the key American market in April, down 2.1 percent on-year, according to the companies. Hyundai Motor sold 86,513 units, down 1.5 percent from the previous year. Its luxury vehicle brand Genesis sold 6,356 units, up 0.8 percent on-year. Kia's sales declined by 2.8 percent from the previous year to 72,703 units. The overall sales decline was due to a base effect from a sales surge last year, as customers rushed to purchase cars ahead of the imposition of Washington's auto tariffs, according to the company. Sales of eco-friendly cars, including electric vehicles (EVs), however, rose 47.6 percent on-year to 48,425 units. Demand for hybrid cars also grew by the sharpest 57.8 percent on-year, affected by the U.S. government's decision to terminate EV

Hyundai Motor Group said Tuesday that it will begin a pilot program letting customers pay separately for electric vehicle (EV) batteries rather than buying them with the car, an effort to reduce the upfront cost of owning an EV. Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Capital will jointly run the pilot in the first half of this year, targeting corporate taxi operators whose battery warranties have expired. The program is made possible by a special regulatory exemption approved by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in November, allowing electric vehicle bodies and batteries to be registered under separate ownership for the first time. Under current vehicle regulations, batteries cannot be registered or managed separately from the vehicle. That has been cited as a drag on EV demand, since battery degradation can reduce resale values and leave owners responsible for costly replacements. The pilot program will cover five Ioniq 5 fleet taxis operating in the Seoul metropolitan area.
Hyundai Motor is accelerating a strategic realignment of its IONIQ brand to focus on China and Europe — two of the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) markets — as the carmaker struggles to overcome tariff-induced earnings decline. Hyundai Motor’s top executives — including Vice Chair Chang Jae-hoon and CEO Jose Munoz — flew to Beijing for the Auto China 2026 exhibition. China’s EV market is dominated by homegrown players, but Hyundai Motor is moving to recover its sales with the strategic launch of the China-exclusive model. The carmaker also shared its plan to introduce 20 new models there over the next five years, spanning both extended-range electric vehicles and fully electric models. A sleek, compact electric hatchback made its debut Monday in Milan, as Hyundai Motor unveiled the IONIQ 3, a strategic entry designed to anchor the automaker’s expansion into Europe’s increasingly competitive electric vehicle market. Revealed during the 2026 Milan Design Week, the vehicle serves as a critical pivot for the Korean automaker as it seeks to capture urban drivers who have long favored smaller, more maneuverable dimensions. The IONIQ 3 joins a lineup that has garnered critical acclaim for its retro-futuristic aesthetic, yet this latest iteration represents a move toward high-volume accessibility. Built on Hyundai Motor's dedicated E-GMP electric architecture, the IONIQ 3 introduces what designers call an “aero hatch” silhouette. The profile is engineered to reconcile two traditionally conflicting goals: the aerodynamic efficiency required to maximize battery range and the interior volume expected by modern commuters. Major electric machinery and equipment developer HD Hyundai Electric has successfully developed a transformer running on an environmentally cleaner oil than a conventional one in the largest capacity ever in the industry here. The HD Hyundai subsidiary said Thursday the accomplished product will head to a substation in the United Kingdom operated by National Grid, a local utility company. The transformer, 400 kilovolt and 460 megavolt-amperes, uses synthetic ester oil as an insulator oil against heat and electricity. The company said the new oil is highly biodegradable, making itself more environmentally sustainable than conventionally used mineral oil. Synthetic ester oil, compared to mineral oil, has a higher flash point and helps reduce risks of fire, according to the company. It added that at times of oil leak, synthetic ester oil’s environmental impact is relatively low, making it suitable for sites where both fire safety and environmental protection are required.
