LG Energy Solution says the unsolved problem in solid-state batteries is making large cells at scale, and expects the technology to reach smartphones roughly a decade before electric vehicles. Europe’s first solid-state gigafactory broke ground in France in February. Samsung SDI, the battery-making arm of Samsung Group, said Friday it will sell part of its stake in Samsung Display to raise funds for future growth investments. Samsung SDI said in a regulatory filing that it will transfer 13.088 million shares in Samsung Display to the display maker, representing about 33 percent of its holdings. The shares are valued at about 4.45 trillion won ($3.2 billion). Once the transaction is completed, Samsung SDI's stake in Samsung Display will fall to 10.2 percent from 15.2 percent. Samsung SDI did not disclose specific plans for using the proceeds, but the funds are expected to be used for facility investments, including its battery plant under construction in New Carlisle, Indiana. The stake sale is seen as reaffirming Samsung SDI's commitment to expanding investments to build a foundation for medium- to long-term growth as the company works to improve its earnings. Demand for energy storage systems and uninterruptible power supply systems has been
Lithium titanate (LTO, Li4Ti5O12) is a well-established battery material that in its pristine state is a poor conductor of lithium ions. It develops high ionic conductivity only during charging, when additional lithium ions and electrons are incorporated into the material.
LG Energy Solution began production on Tuesday at its $2bn Lansing plant, which was originally a GM joint venture before GM sold its stake in December 2024. It will make cells for Toyota’s 2027 Highlander EV and, from next year, for Tesla’s Megapack 3. The battery plant General Motors walked away from opened on Tuesday. Samsung SDI is taking full control of its Indiana battery plant. The South Korean cell maker is buying out General Motors’ 49.99% stake in their joint venture, according to a regulatory filing, ending GM’s ownership in the $3.5 billion factory. That turns the New Carlisle, Indiana plant into Samsung SDI’s first wholly owned battery factory in North America.

The two companies’ joint venture in Indiana is dead, but Samsung SDI still wants to build batteries there.
Samsung SDI said Tuesday it has signed an agreement with General Motors (GM) to jointly develop next-generation prismatic battery cells for potential use in future electric vehicles (EV). Under the agreement, the two companies will codevelop prismatic batteries designed to offer high energy density and fast-charging capabilities, extending their partnership in EV development. As part of the deal, Samsung SDI also acquired GM’s 49.99 percent stake in SynergyCells, a joint venture the two companies established in the U.S. state of Indiana. The ownership change reflects shifts in the battery market since the joint venture was announced, including slower-than-expected growth in EV demand. The two companies have decided to pursue other forms of cooperation rather than continue operating the business as a joint venture. With the acquisition, Samsung SDI will secure its first independently operated battery production base in North America. The company plans to use the facility to produce

Samsung SDI delivered a major earnings surprise in the second quarter, returning to operating profit for the first time in seven quarters as surging demand for AI data center batteries drove a faster-than-expected turnaround. LG Energy Solution also swung to an operating profit in the second quarter, underscoring the growing importance of energy storage systems (ESS) as rising power demand and massive investment in AI infrastructure offset sluggish electric vehicle (EV) demand. Samsung SDI said Thursday that it posted an operating profit of 203.8 billion won ($140 million) in the April-June period, reversing an operating loss of 290.2 billion won a year earlier. The result significantly exceeded market expectations, with analysts largely expecting the company to remain in the red until the second half of the year. Revenue rose 18.5 percent year-on-year to 3.77 trillion won, while net profit reached 471.6 billion won, up 740.5 percent from the previous quarter. Its cumulative operating
Samsung SDI, a major Korean battery manufacturer, said Thursday it swung to a profit in the second quarter from a year earlier, driven by higher battery sales and a U.S. tax credit. In the three months that ended in June, the company posted a net profit of 471.6 billion won ($327 million), shifting from a net loss of 166.7 billion won in the same period last year, it said in a regulatory filing. The company attributed the turnaround to increased shipments of electric vehicle (EV) batteries to Europe and stronger demand for high-voltage batteries used in power tools, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and battery backup units (BBUs). The company also said a sizeable tax credit under the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (AMPC) program of the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act helped boost quarterly earnings. Samsung SDI also swung to an operating profit of 203.8 billion won in the second quarter from an operating loss of 397.8 billion won a year earlier. Sales rose 18.5 percent

Samsung SDI said Tuesday its uninterruptible power supply (UPS) batteries have become the first in the industry to pass a global indoor fire safety test, bolstering its competitiveness in the fast-growing artificial intelligence (AI) data center market. The battery maker said its UPS batteries met all criteria in UL Solutions' Indoor Large-Scale Fire Test (LSFT), becoming the first in the world to meet the standard. UPS systems provide emergency power during outages or voltage fluctuations and are considered critical infrastructure for AI data centers, where uninterrupted power is essential. The Indoor LSFT, introduced by UL Solutions earlier this year, evaluates whether a fire intentionally ignited in a battery module spreads to adjacent racks or systems under conditions that simulate real-world UPS operations. During the test, the battery module in which thermal runaway was intentionally initiated was completely consumed by fire, but the flames did not spread to adjacent racks.
